Clean Water: 30 seconds can save 100 million lives

by Christine Ka’aloa

You don’t have to risk your life to be a hero. You don’t need to donate large sums of cash (though if you can, that’s great too) … What is asked is of is your time…1 minute’s worth is what it takes to put your John Hancock on a petition that will help save 100 million lives. Your time is valuable to others- how much is it worth to you?

Currently The Water for the World Act of 2009 is stalled and needs your support and your voice. Clean water and sanitation is a luxury we often take for granted in the United States but for many developing countries, having clean water and good sanitation means so much more- it can improve and save the lives of families, women and children. The following facts and videos are from ONE.org, ADB and Water for People.

Across the world, 884 million people do not have access to clean water and 2.5 billion do not have access to adequate sanitation.

Every $1 spent on water and sanitation
generates $8 as a result of saved time, increased productivity and reduced health care costs.

4,100 children die each day
from severe diarrhea, which is spread through poor sanitation and hygiene.

Lack of water also has educational ramifications
Many women and girls in developing countries spend much of their days gathering water for their families, walking 3.5 miles on average each day to collect water. Girls may often drop out of primary school because their schools lack separate toilets and easy access to safe water.

The Water for the World Act of 2009

The bill will help provide 100 million people with sustainable access to clean water and sanitation by the year 2015 through targeting developing countries with focused initiatives to improve access both, affordably and efficiently.

The bipartisan bill is currently stalled
in the Committee on Foreign Relations and needs more cosponsors in order to get the attention of Senate leaders.

Please WATCH THE VIDEO from ONE.org’s Matt Damon and SIGN this petition

to help this bill get to the Senate and and help provide 100 million people with first-time, sustainable access to clean water and sanitation by 2015. Help make a difference that others can’t afford to take for granted … clean water!

See how one water/sanitation organization is working to help do their part to aid this world problem.
