From travel maps to GPS gadgets, travel guides and conversion tools, these days, my love for travel has me downloading nifty programs which will turn my iPod Touch (read my post here) into a Swiss Army utility. I spend hours going through them, uploading and deleting, with the ultimate test– to travel with them. On my latest bout of long-term travel, here are 8 travel-worthy iPhone travel apps I found successful, downright useful and which won’t waste your time!
Is the Apple iPod Touch a traveler’s best companion?
Why do I love my Apple iPod Touch?
Before moving to Korea, I couldn’t imagine how much the today-me would want to congratulate myself for getting an Apple iPod Touch 3. At the time, I wasn’t convinced it was my best option to take abroad. Flash forward to a year abroad and nine countries later and I’m convinced it’s the only hand-held choice for a traveler.
You’re probably thinking I’m light years out of the tech loop! Why the post-mortem hype?
Even with all the upgraded versions, Apple’s iPod Touch continues to be the best multi-tasking handheld to manage my life abroad and when I travel. And now with Facetime and Camera, the latest iPod Touch 4(review here) is a dream. Budget-wise, power per price, it beats the iPhone hands down!
iPod Touch or iPhone: how do they weigh in for travel?
Everyone wants the all-in-one features of an Unlocked Apple iPhone 4S , but price-wise, is it really worth it? Many would say, Yes . A phone and anytime internet access (and more considering the proposals of the new iPhone 5!) is a luxury many would happily pay an extra $400 for! As a traveler, I personally might disagree. (more…)
Are there Apple stores in Korea ?
Attention all Mac and Apple fans, you can get your Apple fix in Korea too!
When I first arrived to Korea and realized I needed a converter plug for my Apple Powerbook, I was given an apologetic look and an explanation that there weren’t many Apple stores here. I was told there was one store in Seoul called Frisbee.
How can Korea not have tons of Apple stores?
Well, maybe you should ask Samsung, LG and the like… But in fact, there are more stores than I was led to believe…
4 Essential iPhone Apps for Korea

- iPod Touch & Apple iPhone
4 Essential Apple iPhone and iPod Touch Apps for getting around Korea:
I love my Apple products and these days, I find, I can’t live without my iPod Touch (read my post here). Living in Korea, I’ll tell you why… I want easy and convenient access to Korean information and I want it in English.
Subway in Korea Lite (aka KorSubway)
* Free*
What’s more frustrating than having to spend time searching for your station on a map when you’re in a rush? With KorSubway, my eyes don’t get crazed out with b.s. visuals, while searching for my stops. KorSubway‘s butt-simple visuals makes finding metro connections fast, easy… a snap!
This handy map has been my #1 tool for getting around (though Jihachul may eventually replace it). It has the metros lines for major Korean cities and a finger swipe navigates you through them, allowing you to zoom in and out for an easy read. Settings are in both, Korean and English.
That said, here’s my second fave mapping tool…

Getting a Korean phone (when you don’t know the language)

- My new phone. Many Korean phones come with a Korean-English word dictionary
& subway maps for the major cities in Korea.
Warning: This is not a “How To” on getting a Korean phone…
After what I’ve gone through, I’d probably call it a “How not to get a Korean phone”.
Being new to a country, the last thing you want is extraneous stress and confusion when dealing with important things, like cellphones and phone plans. Still, when the one person (i.e. my Korean co-teacher), whom you were told could help you set up the necessities of your brand new life, can’t lend simple advice or avoids helping you outside of work hours, what do you do?
Whatever it takes. (more…)
Tech Toy Review: Best Camera for Solo Travelers in 2010
There are few things I’m truly jazzed enough to recommend, but I’m all raves about my new Samsung ST500. It’s my 3rd month using it and I’ve been taking it around with me… everywhere! For the solo traveler, blogger and adventure flashpacker, it will make your life and travels, both lighter and easier. I highly recommend it.
