Hello Kitty! What’s up with Korea’s cutesy cafes?

Hello Kitty Cafe
Exploring Seoul’s theme cafes with my mom

A while back, I wrote a post about cafes and Koreans and the subject of breakfast. This is a followup on some of the cafes…

There’s nothing half-hearted about Korea.

When Koreans stage things like festivalstheme parks and museums… they do it enthusiastically and with full explosion!

You can add cute cafes to that list too.

Photo Essay: A Teddy Bear Museum on Jeju Island?

Do you like to visit museums when you travel? What’s the  cutest, quirkiest or most bizarre museum you’ve been to?

I was an art major so to some degree, I can take interest in art museums from time-to-time. But what about war museums, a Chocolate Museum, Sex Museums, a Trick Art Museum or a Sound Museum?  Jeju Island has loads of unique museums to pass time with (read my post on things to do on Jeju).  But how about Teddy Bears?

Personally, I never cared for them as a kid, so why would I visit a museum full of ‘em, as an adult?

Why? (more…)

Is Siloam Sauna the best jjimjilbang in Seoul?

Siloam Spa at night

So, I’ve promised some of you the inside tip on the best jjimjilbang in Seoul…

After the disappointment of Seoul’s much hyped Dragon Hill Spa, I was reluctant to return for another night of overnight non-thrill on a hard wood floor. However, I still wanted to stay at a jjimjilbang and enjoy the Korean bathing culture. Fortunately, a friend offered me an alternative suggestion…
.
From the outside, Siloam Sauna may not look like much. In fact, you may think you’re walking into a shady neighborhood jjimjilbang dive or a love motel. But step inside and explore its five floors of therapeutic health, bathhouse washing  and 24 hour sleeping rooms and you’ll feel like you’ve hit the hidden jackpot of luxurious j-bang finds!

BB Cream: Korea’s Best Kept Secret to Gorgeous Skin!

Hallyu actress, Song Hye Gyo, the face of Laniege

Why do Koreans have such luminous and flawless skin?

For a country fixed on skin-deep aesthetics, plastic surgeons, immaculate dress styles, pinpoint-fluffed hair and healthy diets, it stands to consistent logic that Koreans would know how to ‘create’ great-looking skin!

Back in the U.S., I used to spend hours in Sephora, dropping anywhere from $40-$70 on various bottles of moisturizer and spot lightening (more…)

Vaginal facials: Hip or hype at Seoul’s Dragon Hill Spa?

me-hip-open
Why does my face look like it’s going to explode? You don’t really want to know,  but keep reading to find out …

One of the things I occasionally enjoy are the jjimjilbangs and bathhouses.  It’s not that I enjoy being naked in front of others, but I do love the pampering of a good soak and scrub, whilst relaxing with the Asian bathing community. In fact, being naked in a bathhouse is actually more comfortable than wearing a bikini on a beach!  Seeing bodies of all shapes, sags and sizes, parade around non-chalantly and matter-of-fact, I get to feeling less judgmental in general, about a pinch of fat here, cellulite there…

On my return to Seoul, there was one “luxury” jjimjilbang I’d heard hype about. Dragon Hill Spa has been raved about by CNN.com, The New York Times and bloggers being one of the deluxe spas in Seoul, where celebrities frequent and TV broadcasts like Yoo Jae Suk‘s show, Happy Together (I think), occasionally film. It was a spot I’d been dying to try. (more…)

Surviving a university job interview in Korea

The majority foreigners working in Korea teach English. As a foreigner, getting a job offer to teach a specialty aside from English is unlikely. Not impossible. It’s just not a job that you’ll find commonly posted for a foreigner.

Photo Essay: Hwacheon, Trout fishing and Winter Carnivals in Korea

When Korea wants to throw a winter festival, it goes all out!

Take the Hwacheon Winter Trout Festival in January. Initially, I thought the festival was purely about the spectacle of fishing for sancheoneo (or wild trout) through a hole in the ice or even fishing by hand: it was an event I’d only related with Eskimos and igloos. But when I got there, what I got was a surprising peek into how Koreans enjoy good old-fashioned winter fun.
