It’s a royal pain to be an expat, hunting for English-speaking doctors, dentists and dermatologists in Daegu. Sometimes, you feel like they’re secrets known only unto Koreans. You enter Google searches like a serial number hacker, only for the internet to spit back one name… the same one that most expats recommend and who you’ve tried but think is expensive, third world crap! But seriously, what options do you have?
Here’s the reality of expat life– it’s all network. One person finds/hears of an international doctor, who can speak English and we all go to him. It’s not a choice… it’s the only solution. There’s no long directory list on the expat forums or on the Korean Tourism Organization website and I’m not about to scour the internet, clicking on every random link.
As Korean advances to globalization- the KTO website has improved and Daegu city’s tourism site is readily working towards English-expat friendly.
Daegu parades itself as the city for medical tourism, even over Seoul! Why then, is it so friggin hard to find an international medical directory (and preferably one with website links and English translation page)? Why?
It’s because most directories and medical websites still only speak for Korean. If anything is addressed towards the English language, it’s a meager page or so of minimal information. Daegu? As far as Seoul and Thailand go (the biggest competitors), you’ve still got a long way to go.
But there is good news!
Tucked away in Daegu’s Metropolitan City site, I found a semi-decent directory. I copied and pasted it here. Unfortunately at this time, no email or website listings are inserted. Nope, that’s another hunt, which I leave to you and Google!

Noah Oriental Clinic (노아한의원) I have been to twice for acupuncture. While Dr. Kim (a woman) does speak English well, she might be a little looney.

As for opthamology, I can whole-heartedly recommend Plaza Eye Clinic. The doctor speaks near-fluent English. The facilities are clean and professional, the staff (even the non-English speaking) are extremely friendly. It really is a whole eye clinic — doctors, pharmacy, and contact/glasses retail.
@3gyupsal: ha ha… glad to know your humor is still in tact even tho you’re hopping around on one foot! Medical is pretty cheap here. Went to the dermatologist last night. The university clinics only operate during working hours so I had to go with a private practice and thought they’d charge me a lot. It was much cheaper than the U.S. BTW– I’ve never heard of “private lessons”

This is probably one of the most useful things I have ever seen on a Korea related blog, nice find.
The low cost and prompt service make going to the doctor fun in Korea. It is also a good way to pick up private lessons. I had a dentist ask me about that one time. *Private lessons are illegal, and destroy weekends, I don’t recommend them.
For minor things I like to try my hand by speaking Korean to doctors. It usually works but the leg amputation did nothing for my sore throat.

Yea, this list is awesome, have been using it for a while. I’ve been to Elle Women’s Clinic and Keimyung Dongsan Hospital and they both rock. Elle’s secretaries don’t speak English, but you don’t really need an appt, you can just show up. Same for Dongsan, don’t really need an appt and just got all my shots for SE Asia there.

All for Skin (in Bandwoldang) for dermatology and acne scars. Thumbs up so far! Doctor speaks good enough english to recommend what I should get and why. He didn’t try to sell me the highest and most costly procedure.
Hus’hu in Seoul however, was a total sham– I went for dermatology & the consulting doc “specialized in dentistry”, was rude and tried to sell me things I didn’t need.
@Gina: Thanks for the recommends!! Good to know you can get travel shots there. Any dentist recommends? Keimyung– how did you make an appointment during working hours?? Called them for dermatology; they were only open til 6P like Yeungnam. BTW- wish I knew you knew about that list.

How’s Christmas in Daegu?
I would personally recommend Dr. Dae-hwan Park for Oculoplasty and Dr. Peter Kim maxillo-facial surgeries. They’re both from Catholic University Hospital in Daegu City. I trained under them and they speak English quite well, especially Peter. Their skills are top-notch. During the time that I was there, we had some patients coming in from the States to have their plastic surgeries done by them.

We expats need all the direction we need.
Have been trying to locate Ok Man Cho who is the dentist who made dentures for me in 1967. U.S. dentists declare it a miracale of engineering. (I was civilian employee of he USArmy at Camp Henry.) Dr. Ok and I corresponeded through XMas cards. He moved his family to Teaneck (?) New Jersey, after which we lost contact. My address is Apt. 213, 7304 Good Samaritan Ct. El Paso TX 79912 USA. (My hearing problem makdes phone calls difficult.)
I went to Gynomedi, but no one I saw spoke English… I got through the basic interview by myself, but they asked me to bring my husband so he could translate everything for me… Is there a specific doctor there that speaks English? Thanks! ^.^
@Jill: Since posting this, I’ve found that although this is a list claims English-speaking docs, it’s not always accurate or full-proof. Sometimes, “someone” in the facility speaks English or does it partially. If it’s a large university hospital, like Keimyung, then there might be a website with a contact phone number or department for foreigners. But smaller facilities, generally the doc may know a little English to get by, but the receptionists don’t. Good luck!
thank you for this list! I definitely recommend Hyosung Hospital (it doesn’t say what it is on the list but it’s a women’s hospital, including gyno). The foreign co-ordinator Ms. Ku is so lovely and translates for you, they make it really easy.

I recommend the Hoo Clinic (대구 후한의원) in downtown Daegu for traditional Korean medicine. Went there for an ankle sprain and acupuncture. Modern facility, friendly staff and Dr. Shin speaks fluent English and isn’t batty like the other one recommended on here. It’s in Banwoldang. 053-252-0255.
