From MTV Producer to English Teacher in Korea

My fantastic 4th grade ladies.

These days I find, readers have been curious about the life of an English teacher — What’s my story? Why did I take a gap year break from my life?... Well, my story can be shot from many angles- this is one aspect of it…

My Story:

Reality teens to real life tots

I teach in the public school elementary school system through the EPIK program. When I left my career as a TV producer/shooter in New York City to embark on a gap year(s), I was beginning to feel a little burnt out from producing MTV teen reality shows.  I didn’t have a 9-5 cubicle job, but being a freelancer in NYC is a 24/7 gig. Sustaining a career in a competitive city, I was shackled to the pressure-cooking megalopolis of a work-obsessed regimen and obviously, the economy wasn’t getting better.

I never stopped loving my career in entertainment, mind you. Working in a creative field is my life-long passion and most (more…)

December GRRR!: Published Writings and Top 100s

We might be settling into a White Christmas this holiday season.. This past week it snowed in Korea!

GRRR! Shoutouts
This month, I’ve a big list of awesome GRRR!s to send out, so I’m dedicating this post just for that:

•  December’s issue of Daegu Pockets is out in the stands!
My article Haeneyo: the Last Generations of Korean Mermaids is in it! Well, the 500-word count version of it, at least. Also my story was one of the few translated for Korean readers as well; so I’m delighted. As usual, the magazine packs tons of fun stories about happenings in Korea, curious cultural tidbits, essential Daegu maps and a monthly dose of bite-sized Konglish.

•  Warm fuzzies to EPIK.
Yes, they do good for me, even though I occasionally bitch about them. My piece Making a Pilgrimage: The Hike to Gatbawi was selected and will be published to the EPIK site (here), with other documented EPIKer memoirs and journeys. Because of them, I’m finally a paid writer! Yay. Thumbs up to you, EPIK- even though you/the DMOE screwed my vacation plans!

•  Hollers out to Gadling‘s Alex Robertson Textor for mentioning me and my jjimjilbang travel tip in his article, “Local Budget Travel Secrets“. I’m a big fan of Gadling’s travel stories and tips and discovering local budget secrets are great; it’s even better when you can share them with others!

When one person can follow and live their dreams, they create possibility for everyone else…

•  Bigtime GRRR! s to Almost Fearless‘s lovely Christine
(Okay, we’ve got the same name but she’s a completely different GRRRL)
She posted her 100 Most Inspired Travel Blogs and included me in it! Extra hollers because she’s the first to spell my blogname correctly! Overall, I’m very honored. When I first researched how to turn a gap year into live and work abroad travel lifestyle, Christine’s blog was one of the sparks to get my flight dreams out of park. As the pen of Almost Fearless, she shares her success as a digital nomad lifestyle and basically, tells you how you can do it too.

Why I Love Teaching English to my Korean Students

Christine Teacher! Buy from me!…
(My 4th and 5th grade boys with their own sale tent)

Sometimes life choices can make you feel like you’re on The Price is Right game show. How do you know you’ve made the right choice? So you’ve opened door #1 to a brand new car! Do you still dare risk all for the mystery behind door#2?

There are times I reflect on whether I’m making the right choices for my life.
Last weekend after just having given notice I’d not be renewing my contract, I was on my way to meet friends for a weekend getaway! Our neighborhood park was having a library sale event and I got hijacked by some of my students into the festivities. Heart tugs. I then spent the rest of the afternoon wondering if I hadn’t made a mistake…

The Perks of Teaching English in Korea
Aside from the job salary being one of the highest in the ESL world, the fact I get a rent free apartment and the opportunity to live and travel abroad; the perks for me don’t seem as great as it (more…)

Good News for First-Year NETs : Clarification on Korean Visa Extensions

Furious. Frustrated. Jaded. Piss-poor negative and tempted to risk unauthorized visa extensions. This is how many (Daegu) NETs were feeling at the recent email that went out from DOE’s notifying them of the new visa extensions regulations.  Produce apostilled diplomas and now, a FBI criminal (more…)

So I’ve returned this semester to my teacher’s desk more confident, a bit more cocky and… ahem, a tad lazy. Inevitable. This is second semester and I’ve had 6 months worth of grueling experience to prime me for this lounging funk. What’s changed since last semester? I’ve come to trust the (more…)

5 Tips for New English Teachers in Korea

So the new troops are rolling in! Yes, a new batch of EPIKers just arrived in Daegu this Thursday to fill the district’s request to have at least one Native English speaker (NET) in each school starting this semester. It’s all a part of the Korean Ministry of Education’s eager plan to boost the country’s appetite and mastery…

July Update: ESL teacher flees after sexual crime charges in Daegu.

Okay, here we go– some asshole sexual predator did it again. He went and molested some Korean students in Daegu. Yesterday afternoon, the DMOE sent out an email letter explaining a bit of the incident…

June Updates: Korean Elections, War and Dancing Ladies

So I’m expanding my “Updates” section (initially just a paragraph) in this blog. Many small events and journal observations ranging from important to weird and funny, graze by on an ongoing basis. They make terrific one-offs and I realize they should be documented so that you get a better view of what I’m seeing or experiencing in Korea on a more casual basis.
