Video: Celebrating Buddha’s Day

In honor of Buddha’s Day, here are just a few of the Buddha’s I’ve come across in my travels.

For the month of March, Buddha’s Birthday was celebrated all across Asia in countries such as Nepal, India, Japan, Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam, etc… For some countries this is a month-long celebration; for others it’s less. In Korea, the auspicious day landed on a Friday (May 27) which meant three-day weekend for most of us.  Preparations at Buddhist temples may begin several weeks with the stringing up of paper lantern decorations (more…)

Video: My First Day at a Korean Elementary School

A video of my first day at Anil Elementary School
(totally rough version- I threw it together at the last-minute…)

There was no “teaching” on my first day of school and essentially the rest of the week.

My job has been to sit in our English teacher’s office room and browse through textbooks. So I volunteered to do a Learning about Introductions presentation for my classes, to escape boredom and to finally see some of my kids. Apparently, on Facebook, some others are experiencing the same sitting-around thing.  It sounds as if many co-teachers aren’t prepared to have to work with us or are (more…)

Swayambhunath Stupa “aka the Monkey Temple“, Kathmandu, Nepal

Located atop a forest hillside overlooking the Kathmandu Valley is one of the most ancient and revered religious sites in Kathmandu- Swayambhunath Stupa.  The stupa is claimed to be over 2,000 years old and is a re-known pilgrimage site for many devout Hindus and Buddhists in Nepal. Then this will be a small part of (more…)

Sometimes, the best survival tool for dissolving anticipatory travel fears and worry is to carry humor and re-connect to inspiration. In all my itinerary planning and nerves, I forgot about this. Humor (more…)

Video: On the Ganges (Varanasi, India)

Each year, there are thousands of pilgrimages to the holy city of Varanasi. At sunrise taking a boat tour along the river is a great way to see the ghats…a dip in the Ganges River is considered to be both, holy and purifying. In the evening, Varanasi holds a glorious puja ceremony- the Ganga aarti.
