Funny! I’m reading this while chilling in a Starbucks in Seoul and its reminding me why I came here solo. I normally travel to places where I have someone to show me around. Here it’s just me and yes, I’m learning a bout more about myself as I knew it would be a bit of soul searching trip. I think the biggest lesson is to give myself permission to just sit and hang out. Thanks for the inspiration.

In reply to Christine Kaaloa. You are 100% right. Once I arrived, the fear wasn't what I imagined it to be. I admit the first 2 days were tough in terms of making new friends but I eventually adapted to being alone when I wanted to and accepted that sometimes other travellers are comfortable in their own "groups" and not everyone is as friendly as you want them to be which is totally fine. The fear of safety was another thing but being street smart and trusting your gut is very important. I learned to become more aware of my surroundings. Thanks again for your help :)

In reply to Jane Lee. @Jane Lee: Awww. You just made my work worthwhile! Congrats on your first solo and Nicaragua too! You're not alone in the fear dept. To experience a foreign place alone is terrifying to many. I'm not sure if you noticed but the moment you touch down, it's all just do-do-do and everything is more 'actionable' and problem solving. FEar doesn't quite enter the picture in the immensity that we all imagine. I hope you recognized your kickass moments too! It can open doors in who you are and your confidence. =D xo

Hi Christine, I just came back from a solo backpacking trip in Nicaragua and wanted to thank you immensely for your blog entries about solo travel. I was terrified of going alone at first but once I “settled in” to each town I went to and got more comfortable being alone, I found I loooved travelling alone. I had a rewarding and unforgettable trip and your writing definitely helped reassure me when I doubted myself. Now I can’t wait to travel alone again! Thanks and safe travels!
