Thanks for reminding me to carry a bag filled with essentials if I were to travel by bus for a long time. My friends and I are thinking of renting minibuses that will take us to our destination and I’m really excited since this will be my first travel trip. For Myanmar specifically, I’d say bring a little torch light along. I find it most useful as most of the little squats have no lights and it’s pitch black! Once I had to pee with the door slightly ajar because I forgot my torch light in the bus.

I witnessed something similar in India where a man was getting left behind and he chased the bus banging on it until one of the passengers heard and called out to the bus driver to stop. Made me wonder if I'd ever have to do the same. But as a result, if I get off the bus, I never stray too far from it.

Christine, these are such important and relevant advice and they’re very much useful for couples as well. In Vietnam, I once experienced a bus driver pulling over in the middle of nowhere at night for a break and then just take off leaving a solo traveler behind. Luckily, I was awake and made the driver stop, but since then I’ve always dreaded this would happen to me too. Taking a bus might sound simple, but it can become quite uncomfortable if you don’t take precautions.
