Great tips and ideas. I just got to Bangalore, India. I’ve got a purifying water bottle but was wondering if you can get the Hypoallergenic mattress protector in country. Right now I’m living the posh life, staying in a hotel on a business trip but I will be traveling out afterward.

you can order these bottles at http://www.droppure.com and they generally deliver to your place with 3-4 days. So better reach India, check into your hotel where you intend to stay for a week and then order these bottles.

My short list: Life Straw (get the latest model), solar powered keychain flashlight, disposable wash cloths, unscented (purchased at medical supply stores, which also sale dry hair shampoo), a really good pair of thick socks, shamagh or scarf, a small first aid kit.

In reply to barbarasdinner. @Barbara: That boiling wand was the bomb! It's amazing what little village shops carry, and yet, it reminds you that these are things Indians need also. A new filtration system I'm curious about is the Life Straw. Haven't tried it but it looks like it might be easy to use. Good luck and feel free to let me know what eventually works for you!
