It was so funny reading this as me and my wife just flew CEA yesterday from LAX to Pudong Changhai to Manila. Most of you assessment are dead on...the baggage allowance on our flight are two 50lbs and you have a carry on and a personal like a backpack. You will find this as you get most of the most expensive Asian carrier, so my point is for less than $500 with insurance I don’t think I I have the right to complain especially the service that’s better than my loved and beloved PAL.

Just to be clear, China eastern is certainly a legacy (read: high-cost) carrier rather than a budget airline. This should be clear from their cabin configuration (there 777-300er is premium heavy with first class), a myriad of aircraft types, and the fact that all ticket comes with luggage allowance. They are just a Chinese airline offering low price international tickets since they have government subsidy and hugely profitable domestic route to support it.

Thanks for sharing! TSA in China can be iffy- they love to confiscate phone battery banks that are obviously phone batteries. I had my favorite travel lipstick phone battery taken away after several years of flying with it. secretly think employees like to take them home. haha.

The no free meals airlines sure make you appreciate the ones that step up their game. Some of the CEA fares are significantly lower than AirAsia (after you add in luggage fees, etc..)
