@Sophia: Each time I set out on a new country, I experience a bit of that hesitation b/c the country is mysterious and I can feel uncertain of myself and that mystery. But when I take that leap, that feeling immediately starts resolving itself. Once you’re there, you’ll find you have more control. Your imagination is no longer in the way. The feeling is quite liberating.

@Hannah on the Map: Yessss, true. That’s why I say- Ask questions. It’s a disarming way to occasionally break into what seems like a hostel clique… but might just be “fast friends”. Often, you know who’s come together vs who’s latched together and in hostels, there’s a lot of latching going on. If I hear of folks talking about a site I am curious about– it’s information I need to know, so I will just inject my curious question in. It’s like doing a running jump onto a fast carousel. I express interest in wanting to go, hold onto the ride a bit and that subtly opens the door. =) Breaking into a hostel group isn’t like breaking into a party clique, I feel. It’s way more acceptable to butt your way in.
