Long-term Solo Travel Trip Planning: Where Should I Go Next?

Last Updated on February 7, 2016 by Christine Kaaloa

How do I love traveling alone? Let me count the ways…

I was in Sarawak, Borneo, nearing the end of my third month of both, winging my travels through Southeast Asia and India and having extended my travel time. The fatigue of long-term travel, winging plans and budget crunching was starting to set in.

The question that frustrates many long-term solo travelers was now frustrating me … the question of ‘Where should I go next?’.

While there are many reasons which continually draw me back to solo travel, when I’m traveling for a longer periods of time, I’ve noticed, I ultimately experience this one frustration.

It all sounds like an easy question, but it’s not.

Friends all cheer– but you have so much freedom!  But they’re only seeing ‘the grass as greener’ and miss the point entirely.  The truth is, give a person too much freedom and they don’t always know what to do with it.  As a society, we’re conditioned to having unlimited freedom. We’re used to rules, people telling us No or societal standards, which make us feel guilty or wrong for going against the herd mentality.

Many people also don’t know how to travel alone or be alone. Just as many don’t know how to access their G-spot (let alone travel G-spot).  So having an unlimited amount of freedom, is very much a blessing as it is a curse for soloists, as decision making entails learning about and locating our travel G-spot.<

…In a very short amount of time, I might add.

Thus, the question of ‘Where should I go next ?’ is not easy, because you’re forced to poke around and look inside that darkness of who you are– with a pinhole flashlight — and figure out who you are and where that person is located.

Watch the video for the inner dialogue that goes on in my head, the reason we have difficulty with decision making and how I ultimately solve it.

Where I went next

I went to Khao Lak, Thailand for a 3 day Diving Liveaboard Experience in the Similan Islands.  Yup, I found that travel G-spot.
