Review: “Best Western Longbranch Hotel” (Cedar Rapids, Iowa)

“Climbing the ladder with a sense of humor”

The Best Western’s Longbranch Hotel in Cedar Rapids, has all the humor of an Atlantic City casino sporting a wild west theme. Built around 1968, its owner- inspired by the television series, Gunsmoke– decided to design the hotel’s face to look like Kitty’s Long Branch Saloon.

The hotel interior has a slightly dated and dungeon look, yet attempts to hold the standard offered by higher ranked neighboring competitors (ie. a room refrigerator, coffee maker, sofa chair, work desk and cable TV). It offers FREE Wi-fi, as well as a guest computer in the lobby, and a complimentary pass to FREE continental breakfast. The bed is comfortable if you like really soft Queen beds. You can almost forget that you’re staying in a Best Western hotel until you notice 1) the “casino” smell- the Non-smoking rooms are situated above the “Smoking” ones and there’s a tinge of waft that taints the environment occasionally, and 2) the seals on the shampoo and moisturizer bottles are broken!

My company usually books me at  3-5 star hotels, so the Best Western name didn’t initially inspire applause. The rate was $119/night. Despite its flaws, I appreciate the novelty of staying in “a pseudo-theme hotel” in Cedar Rapids and the attempt to accomodate business patrons is much appreciated. Long Branch is climbing the ladder…and it has a sense of humor.
