Let’s GRRR travel to Thailand!

Welcome to my first group tour! I designed this trip to be a bucket list trip that I’d love to be on. Like  the famous Thai national noodle dish-  Pad Thai – this tour is a dazzling and tasty blend for everyone, from travelers, foodies and cultural explorers. We’ll see main attractions to satisfy that travel fix, while experiencing local immersion. We will have a food tour which takes us to the streets and local markets, but we’ll also have hotel meals and a few meals you take on your own, so you can explore the streets on your own terms, shop or squeeze in a cheap 1 hour massage! We will have an organized itinerary and at least three star accommodations. Activities should not be challenging and you will have one flexible day to choose an additional activity or spend it at your leisure. The trip will have a local guide to aid our deeper understanding of the culture and manager accompanying us to ensure safety.

GRRR travel workshop: Navigating “local” and creating your legend with travel

This is an experiential trip, designed to expose you to a variety of different environments and transportation,  to show you ways to improve your travel confidence and navigate the unfamiliar and foreign. Thailand is a perfect setting for this! I’ll share tips on how I navigate these things as a solo traveler and make the best of any situation.  Those interested in vlogging or creating your own travel content, be sure to bring your camera as we’ll touch lightly upon storytelling as you use this trip to find and develop your own story (aka #legend) as a traveler.

Activity & Pace

This trip may feel intensive to those who hope for more down time to relax in one place (if so, you might want to rethink this trip)! We’re exploring Thailand’s dazzling diversity. We will weave through Thailand’s bucket list highlights from Bangkok’s urban and canal life, then make our way down south to a rainforest and beaches. We will experience a gamut of multi-transportation to get around.  We’ll go hard in the beginning with urban life because there’s so much to see and eat.  Towards the middle we’ll have more time to soak in natural surroundings. We’ll wind down at the end giving you a bit more flex time to re-check your energy levels and choose your recreation.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Bangkok

Sawadee-kah! We’ll pick you up from the airport and take you to your first hotel in Bangkok where you’ll meet the crew.

Meet in the lobby at 7pm to embark on a Bangkok streets eats tour by tuk tuk! I love learning about Thai street food and merging it with unique transportation, so you’re in for a treat! We will zoom around Bangkok’s vibrant streets to a local street market, where food carts spring up to locals coming home from work. Here we will sample yummy street eats. Next, hop back on the tuk tuk to catch a glimpse of two beautiful Bangkok landmarks wonderfully lit at night, the Marble Temple and the Anantasamakom Throne Hall. Time for more food! Indulge your taste buds at Bangkok’s most famous Pad Thai restaurant. Stroll through Bangkok’s largest flower market and visit the magestic Wat Pho after dark, when it’s magically lit!  End the night sipping on a refreshing cocktail at a rooftop bar as you soak in the splendid views of the Chao Phraya river and the twinkling buildings along the riverbanks.

Arrival: Fly into Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) by 5pm to make the food tour at 7pm. We will provide 3 airport transfers between 8am – 5pm.

Included

Bangkok Street Food Tour, Airport Transfer, Dinner

Day 2 : Bangkok

Time to explore Bangkok! Wanna know how I travel? In this city tour of Bangkok’s highlights we’ll use different transport to get around from boat to foot. Visit the giant Golden Buddha at Wat Traimit, the dazzling architecture of the Grand Palace.  Board a longtail boat to visit the canals of Bangkok’s klongs, and the local talent at the Khlong Bang Luang Artist Village. End the tour with a visit to the temple of Wat Arun.

Hotel: X2 Vibe Bangkok Sukhumvit (or equivalent)

Included

 Guided Bangkok City Tour, Breakfast/Lunch

Day 3 Samut Songkhram

Today you’ll depart in the early morning and transfer to Mae Klong railway market, a local market set up right on the railway! This market springs to life selling a fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, seafood, snacks, but what makes the market unique is that a train runs through the market eight times a day. Vendors pack up quick and have to move out of the way. Next you’ll head to a fruit plantation to learn how local plant  and harvest the fruits. You’ll be able to satisfy the hunger you’ve worked up over lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch it’s time for another market, but this time it’s a floating market ! I love Thailand’s floating markets. Although Damnoen Saduak is the most popular market for tourists, I want us to experience a floating market with a bit more of an authentic Thai vibe. Amphawa Floating Market is where you can leisurely snack on (OMG) seafood, thai dessert, or buy souvenirs for friends and family. Then it’s time to head back to Bangkok where you will hop on an overnight train to Suratthani. ( An overnight train in Thailand is a MUST! )

Included

3 Guided Tours: Thai fruit plantation, Mae Klong Railway Market & Amphawa Floating Market, Breakfast/Lunch

Day 4 : Surat thani to Khao Sok National Park

After catching your zz’s on the train, we arrive into Suratthani Railway Station. Hit the local Thai 7-Eleven to shop snacks before we transfer to Khao Sok National Park, a rainforest reserve with wildly jaw-dropping karst limestone mountains. Neighboring the Andaman Sea, this gem is less touristed ( fewer travelers know about it). Here you’ll check into your jungle home by the river for the next day.

Enjoy a morning at leisure, relaxing in your luxurious river lodge with a perfect view of the surrounding nature. After a delicious Thai lunch, float through the forest by canoe and soak up the towering karst limestone mountains . If we’re lucky, we’ll spot monkeys, birds, snakes and lizards. Finally, head back to the lodge for another tasty Thai dinner with our new traveling family.  Overnight in Khao Sok

Included

Guided: Khao Sok National Park Canoe Tour, Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Day 5: Khao Sok National Park

Can life be any more adventurous? Let’s see… We  embark on a morning jungle hike with a local guide, who can teach us about the local plants and animals along the way. After lunch, head to Cheow Larn Lake – an artificial freshwater lake brimming with tranquility. We’ll take a long tail boat to our new crib– a floating bungalow ! Spend your free time swimming, kayaking, vlogging your surroundings or relaxing before a group dinner.  Overnight on Cheow Larn Lake Raft House (or equivalent)

Included

Khao Sok National Park Jungle Trek, Lunch/Dinner

Day 6: Khao Sok National Park to Phuket

Rise and shine! This morning we’ll take a longtail boat journey to visit Pakarang Cave, an aquatic cave: we’ll start with a 15 minute trek to an amazing lagoon. We’ll hop on a bamboo motor boat that will drive us 5 minutes to the cave itself! Inside we’ll see stalactites and stalagmites.

Back at the Raft House, enjoy a delicious lunch and spend your afternoon at leisure. At 2 pm you’ll check out, hop back on the longtail boat to the pier, and head to your hotel in Phuket. Tonight we will be visiting a Night Market.  Overnight in Phuket

Included

Guided tour of Pakarang Cave, Breakfast/Lunch

Day 7:  Phuket

Participate in the optional James Bond Island Tour or enjoy a free day before our last meal together.

Experience an exciting sea kayak adventure around the famous James Bond Island. Explore the mysterious Suwankuha Temple, also known as the Monkey Cave, where you’ll see an incredible Buddhist shrine nestled deep in the natural grotto. Journey by traditional longtail boat to the picturesque Phang Nga bay. Visit the charming fishing village of Koh Panyee and enjoy a delicious Thai meal before continuing on to the awe-inspiring sea caves of Talu Island. Discover the amazing natural scenery of James Bond Island made famous by the 1974 movie “The Man with the Golden Gun”. After taking in the breath-taking beauty of Phang Nga National Park, set sail from Kasom Pier and return to your hotel in time for dinner.  Note: The tour starts approximately from 10-10:30am and ends 5:30-6pm. Tour itinerary may be changed depending on tide and weather conditions.

This evening is a farewell dinner and a cheers to a week well spent making new travel friends for future wanderlusting and creating fond memories of Thailand.  Overnight in Phuket

Included

Breakfast, Farewell Dinner

Day 8: Phuket

FAQ

Is Thailand safe?

Yes, Thailand is very safe– it has felt like one of the safest countries I’ve traveled.  As a predominantly Buddhist country, violent crime is super low. For the most part, the Thai are a happy, hospitable and laid back culture such that Thailand is a popular destination for all types of travelers, including first time solo travelers. It is an easy country to fall in love with and for a while, it felt so perfect, I seriously considered moving there.

Also, as a female solo traveler, I strive to operate safely and responsibly in all things I do.  I would never knowingly put my life in danger and I would certainly never risk the lives of others by running tours there.

Still, you should always practice good street smarts in travel. Scams and theft are a possibility anywhere and Thailand is prone to it. While Buddhism looks down on harming life, it does not say anything about outsmarting someone out of their money.  Scams can occur with things like taxis/tuk tuks not using meters, wanting to take you jewelry shopping or someone redirecting you from the Golden Palace or your hotel.

On my tour, you will likely not encounter these things, as we will have a local guide and a trip manager from Trova Trip to ensure safety precautions are taken in all things. Additionally, you will learn about them as part of the street smart part of my workshop.

What happens when I land in Bangkok?

After you land in Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumni Airport, you will proceed through to immigration and then go directly to baggage claim to retrieve your bags.  Someone from my team will be waiting for you with a sign outside of Arrivals, so they can bring you to the hotel.

Note: You can access Survarnabhumni Airport’s free wifi @ AirportTrueFreeWiFi. This wifi will not work in Immigration.

Does the tour include flights?

International flight to and from Thailand are not included in this tour price.  If you need help finding flights, let me know and I’ll do my best to help you find the best deal. Meanwhile, I recommend comparing prices between Google Flights and Skyscanner (this is what I do).

I reserved my spot. Should I book my flight now?

I know you’re excited to travel and i’m excited to have you on my tour! But I need a minimum in order to run this trip.  Once I have cleared that minimum, you’ll be notified ASAP that it is okay to book your trip.

What is the average group size?

At the moment, this tour is limited to a maximum of 16 people.

However, I am still considering dropping this number to a smaller size so we can have a tighter group with even more one-on-one time.  So secure your spot today! I’d like this to feel like a family environment, where you can make travel buddies to connect with for future trips.

Do I have to share a room?

The tour price is based on double occupancy, which means, you will share a room with another guest.  Solo travelers who join the tour and want to share a room will be paired with a guest of same sex. I’ll do my best to pair you up with a good match prior to your arrival.

Traveling alone and prefer to have a private room ? There is a single supplement fee of $400 USD.  (Unfortunately, I don’t have a say in this aspect of pricing).

Will there be downtime on this tour?

Yes. Although this itinerary is fairly action packed (and I’d like you to rest up before you come), you will have free time for yourself.
Please see the Activity & Pace section near the top of the page.

I’ve also purposely left out a few meals so you can explore alternate options with one of your newly made travel buddies or join me on an impromptu excursion to find food.

Can I stay in Thailand longer (after the tour)?

Absolutely!

There are many adventures to be experienced in Southeast Asia and Thailand is a great springboard for it.  I will be creating a Facebook group where you can meet and plan in advance. We can also help you plan your itinerary from tours, hotels and transportation.
