In Spanish, “tú” and “Usted” both mean “you”, but “tú” is informal.

It’s always better to have someone say, “Don’t worry! You can use ‘tú’ with me” than to have someone say, “Please refer to me as ‘Usted’, young lady”.

Thanks for the tip, Senorita! Have you ever had someone say that to you? Yeah, that would throw a wet blanket on anyone’s day. In NYC my superintendent was Mexican and for the life of me, I could only remember tu phrases. Sometimes I didn’t know whether to attempt a convo with him or not… I wasn’t sure if he’d feel like I was speaking to him like a janitor. ;-P
