Shooting Reality Food Porn at the Food Network

8A call time and I am over at Chelsea Marketplace at 9th Ave/16 Street to shoot a Toyota sponsored Recipe Makeover Shoot for  FoodNetwork.com. Our small crew of 3 camerapersons, AP, PA and my friend and Producer, Jim G. congregate below at one of the cafes, then head up to the Food Network Kitchens to setup lights, prep, meet our talent and shoot, as Jim calls it, “Food Porn”. The host for this show is Rob Bleifer, head executive chef at the FN Kitchens for over 8 (or was it 11?) years and a surprisingly very down-to-earth guy with a mellow Chicago feel about him. He is more than compliant in lifting his arms in scarecrow so that I can mic him up to my camera each time he does a wardrobe change.

Now I didn’t know this, but the FN Kitchens is not an actual sound stage, even though its got enough wattage and stage lights to function as one. It’s an actual fully-functional kitchen where all the FN chefs (and its celebrity chefs) come to practice, test and fine tune their recipes. Think of it like a mad scientist gastronomical lab! The kitchen has 6 work stations with a small separate room on the side for the “taste testers” who are the gastro-equivalent of “the Noses” in the perfume industry. The taste testers sample the foods that the chefs make and offer suggestions to improving the flavor of the dish. (more…)

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week ’09: John Patrick Organic

DBTV covers Mercedes Benz Fashion Week 2009: John Patrick Organic
February 16, 2009

This is my first time shooting at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week 2009 (Feb 13-20)! Did I see a catwalk under the Bryant Park tent with paparazzi and glamorous celebrities? No. Models walking the infamous catwalk? Nuh-uh. I was in the basement of a nearby church on 38th street shooting an indie fashion show where instead of a catwalk, the models pose together around a chair and a sofa as if on a film set of I’m Rich, Pre-Pubescent, Beautiful and Bored.

But who cares? I’m in the realm of beautiful thin people whose legs are the size of my arms and I’m also standing next to a ‘Bake Sale’ table to remind me of human temptation.

Think “organic“, “cotton”, “sustainable style”, “recycled fabrics & textiles” and if you’re in fashion, you may guess the indie designer of this show.

Eco conscious designer, John Patrick Organic is known for his high-end sustainable style (all made from locally grown/raised organic textiles, fibers and animals) and he’s showcasing his 2009 Fall Line in a David Lynchian film noir way.

The program brochure for his collection  looked like a restaurant menu, listed each model’s name with their corresponding outfit and the ingredient textiles used. Perhaps most of the people who attend these shows know (more…)

The Yoga of Travel: GRRRL SOLO- Part I (A New York Valentine’s Special)

“Two hearts and a table for one”
February 15, 2009

.

Honey,…Dearest,… Babe… & The Stamp of Being SOLO.

You don’t have to be an ANTI-VALENTINES DAY grinch or a PRO V-DAY supporter. But who said if you’re solo, you can’t celebrate Valentines day as well?

In the winter chill of Manhattan, being and going SOLO can feel difficult but it is often the adopted lifestyle for a Manhattan culture absorbed in the climb of skyscraping ambitions. Soloists are definitely not alone. In NYC, “solo” is not necessarily a humiliating stamp of being an ‘unloved’ ogre but generally means you’re in a stronger and more passionate relationship ….with your career (pbbbt!). However, there are still uncomfortable moments of realization and places like restaurants, clubs or events, where being TWO feels like it would be so much better than being ONE.

Todd Oldham’s Valentine’s Day film shoot

Today is a bit of juggle- I have 2 shoots back-to-back with different clients. Both are advocating either vegan or vegetarian lifestyles! First, is a DBTV shoot in downtown Manhattan for a Valentine Day Special with our host, Josh interviewing and doing crafts with designer-photographer & host of “House of Style”, Todd Oldham. Then I will cross town to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to shoot a photoshoot for a vegan shoe designer. There’s nothing more invigorating or ideal to me than working amongst creative people!
