In this post, I’m sharing how to choose the perfect fanny pack and best waist packs for solo travelers.

Gone are the days when “the fanny pack” is considered a nerdy tourist’s outdated fashion. These versatile accessories have made a revival in the travel world, becoming a popular choice for both, male and female travelers, seeking both functionality and sleek, minimalist style. Being a content creator, even I’ve become a converted fan of waist packs for my solo traveling needs and everyday wear. They are a game-changer!

Why Choose a Fanny Pack?

There’s a handful of reasons why fanny packs are experiencing a resurgence. But let me tell you what started my switch from a purse or sling bag to a fanny pack.

As a female travel content creator who travels solo with a camera daypack of gear, I also need a lightweight, minimal and quick access solution to three essential things: my vlog camera, mobile phone and a credit card.

• Enhanced Security: Fanny packs offer a secure way to carry valuables, keeping them close to your body and out of reach of potential thieves. Much like my wrist wallet, wearing a waist pack, you minimize your risk of pickpocketing because your pouch is central to your body- either on your waist or on your chest (if you wear it as a cross-body sling). A waist pouch- especially worn as a chest pouch– is easier to protect and deter pickpockets than a purse or backpack if you are in a crowded marketplace. • Comfort : One of the biggest advantages of fanny packs is their comfort. Unlike traditional bags that can strain your shoulders and back, fanny packs distribute weight pretty evenly, reducing fatigue and discomfort.
• Convenient Access: Waist packs provide easy and quick access to your essentials without the need to constantly rummage through a larger bag. I look down, zip!… and voila, my phone/camera/money are there!
• Versatile and Minimalist Style: Although minimalist in style,  there’s a fanny pack to suit every taste and both, casual and dressy occasions.

Ways I Wear my Waist Packs for Travel

As fanny packs are versatile, I wear them in four main ways:

• An over-the-shoulder purse for grab-and-go moments
• A crossbody chest pouch for ergonomic convenience, physical activities and increased safety precaution
• A front waist pouch when I’m using it as a utility belt with pouch.
• A back pouch. When my pouch is stuffed with contents and it gets heavy, I swivel it to my back where I place less strain on my lower back and it’s forward lean.

How to Choose the Perfect Fanny Pack for Travel

When selecting a fanny pack for your solo travels, here’s some things I like to consider:

• Security Features: What sets a dog walking fanny pack apart from a travel fanny pack are its security features. For solo travelers, I recommend fanny packs with features like RFID blocking to protect your credit cards. Interlocking and self-locking zippers are an additional security feature that street smart waist packs offer for travelers.
• Comfort and Adjustability: Ensure the fanny pack has adjustable straps to fit your body comfortably. Some waist packs come in a longer length for large travelers. I even once bought a pack that came with an extender strap!  A padded waist belt can help prevent discomfort during extended wear. Adjusting your fanny pack to be worn in different ways can also help rejuvenate you from the fatigue of placing your pouch weight in one spot.
• Organization: Choose a fanny pack with multiple compartments and pockets to keep your belongings organized and easily accessible. Although I like the idea of a secret pocket behind the pack for things like a passport, I don’t feel comfortable storing valuables there. Might be just me!
• Style and Design: Select a fanny pack that complements your personal style and the activities you’ll be engaging in. In researching this list of best waist packs for travel, when I found fanny packs accommodating endurance training and expeditions which take a toll on the body, I was like whuuut? Oh yeah, those type of travelers exist too! (I’m just not one of them)
• Size and Fit: Packs can come in various sizes and although you want to be able to fit your essentials,  it can be a fashion choice to want a small pack over a large or wide pouch. Also waist size is another thing to look at. I feel like the average waist band stretches anywhere  from 40-50 inches. if you require more strap, then some packs offer extensions.

The drawback to having a large pouch is that I’m tempted to load a lot of items in it, so it can get heavy. Additionally, the large version accommodates larger people more than small. Tips for Using a Fanny Pack

• Choosing your Ideal Size: The ideal size of a fanny pack depends on your personal needs and the items you plan to carry. If you’re looking for a compact option to hold essentials like your phone and wallet, a smaller fanny pack may be sufficient. This is actually the best way to use it.If you need to carry more items, such as a tablet or camera, a larger fanny pack with more compartments would be a better choice. However, what I personally found is that if I have a large pack, I fight with my temptation to overstuff my pack, which begins to cause too much weight and discomfort.  Pro-Tip: A minimalist fanny pack to carry a handful of small items is its real superpower!
• Be Realistic: As I mentioned, it’s important to avoid overstuffing your fanny pack. If you’re trying to stuff many daytrip items into it, then maybe what you really want is either an anti-theft purse, an anti-theft cross-body bag or a daypack and you might as well get one or a fanny pack will frustrate you.
• Wear It Strategically: Experiment with different wearing styles to find the one that feels most comfortable and secure for you. When I want to access it like a toolkit, I wear it around my waist. When I’m feeling very casual, I might wear it as a over-the-shoulder purse and if I’m going into a crowded area, I’ll wear it as a cross-body sling.
